Boardmasters Foundation announces 2023 funds of £115,492 to be donated back into the local community.

2023 Applications Are Now Open For Local Charities And Organisations To Benefit
£436,000 Raised Since The Foundation Was Founded In 2017

Vision Nine, organisers of Cornwall’s surf and music festival Boardmasters, have announced that the 2023 event has raised a staggering £115,492 for the Boardmasters Foundation, the largest total of funds raised since the Foundation began.Individuals, groups, charities and organisations that fall under the Boardmasters Foundation key pillars of focus – Culture and Community – can now apply for funds as 2023 applications are now open.

Established in 2017, the Boardmasters Foundation was born out of the extended festival team’s desire to give back and support the culture and surrounding communities that are at the heart of the annual festival which takes place at Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay. The just-announced 2023 total funding pot means over £436,000 has been raised in total since the Foundation commenced its work, and the last two years alone has seen a 35% rise in these funds.

Applications are reviewed against the Foundation’s key pillars of focus – Community and Culture – and groups and organisations who are interested in applying should visit boardmasters.com/community to enter into the process. The closing date for applications is Friday 5th January at 5pm.
Boardmasters Foundation funds raised from the previous festival year were awarded to 38 different charities, projects, schools and initiatives across Cornwall and beyond including Wave Women UK, Schools Consent Project, Black Voices Cornwall, Cornwall Food Action, Newquay train station toilets, Concrete Waves and Children’s Hospice South West. Local schools included Mawgan-in-Pydar Community Primary School, Newquay Junior Academy, Newquay Tretherras, St Columb Major ACE Academy, St Columb Minor ACE Academy, The Bishops’ C of E Learning Academy, Trenance Learning Academy, Trevisker Community Primary School and Treviglas Academy.

CEO of Vision Nine, and founder of the Boardmasters Foundation, Andrew Topham, said: ‘We continue to be ambitious in our objective of building on, and growing, the annual Boardmasters Foundation fundraising and charitable donations year-on-year. Our 2023 total of over £115,000 is yet another rewarding success, meaning we can encourage even more Newquay and Cornwall-based organisations to consider applying. This then means we can all work together to deliver funding for vital and far-reaching projects and programmes, many of which can positively impact daily lives whilst meeting today’s ongoing challenges. Each year we review all of the applications against our key pillars of Community and Culture and this year will be no different.”

Andrew continues, “We seek to support some projects and charities with one-off donations, whilst continuing to work with our long-term partners with longer-term investment programmes. We’re hoping to see a strong set of applications in this round for funds that can really make a perceivable, ongoing difference in and around Newquay and right across Cornwall.”

Boardmasters, Cornwall’s own surf and music festival, returns to Newquay next summer from 7 – 11 August 2024. Following its biggest edition to date in 2023, demand for next year’s festival is already at a record high with tens of thousands of fans signing up for the pre-sale. Expect the biggest names in music, an exhilarating 5-day surf competition featuring the most exciting global surf talent, and much more, all taking place across two stunning sites – Watergate Bay and Fistral Beach – on the Cornish coast.

“Pe’ahi aka Jaws finally woke up. It wasn’t easy, the strong winds and long interval swell made it very difficult to paddle-in into the waves.’ said Kai “But there is always the diamonds in the rough and I almost got the best barrel I’ve had out there.”

Ex QS charger, still a ripper, but now a super star DJ Paul Fisher, ‘Fisher’ shut down Hollywood Boulevard on the weekend with a massive show including a legend opening intro from Thor himself. He also shut down the Australias Today Show live on Friday in typical Fish fashion.

As big as they come. I just hope someone is making a movie of this.

Massive!

Our Scottish Seas

Our Scottish Seas

The Alchemy Experiment is excited to announce the debut solo exhibition from professional surf & adventure photographer Samuel Howard

Photographer Samuel Howard takes on a subversive journey into the beautiful oceans surrounding Scotland. With the majority of his work, Sam dives into the ocean with his camera, capturing the magical moments as he swims. From tiny water gems to powerful waves, we will venture to the far corners of Scotland and discover the beauty in the water often right next to our towns and cities.

We will also gain a taster of his ongoing personal project ‘In Scotland We Surf’, which delves into the incredible hidden community that calls our ocean home.

Sam Howard is a professional lifestyle and adventure photographer with a love for the ocean and surfing. Born and raised near Aberdeen in the North East of Scotland he discovered surfing and the benefits of the ocean through a close knit group of friends.

He became fascinated by photography after purchasing a camera to record memories of a surf trip to Africa. Photography has brought the same escape as surfing for Sam and has helped him through some difficult times of mental health.

He believes in the health benefits of the ocean and wants to provide support to the community and introduce them to this concept through his work.

A proportion of the profits from ‘Our Scottish Seas’ will be donated to @waveprojectscotland . Preview night on Friday 27th Oct.

The exhibition will run at The Alchemy Experiment in Glasgow from 24th Oct – 5th Nov. With an opening night of the 27th of November 7-9pm.

The opening night includes:

• Charity donation on the door

• Free drinks

• Short film screening

• Q & A

• limited edition run of prints for purchase

He set about putting the 4:3mm Wired through its paces proper in the often-hostile land of deep-Atlantic swells, razor sharp rocks and stray dogs. Got a bit hot so he ended up stepping down to his 3:2mm team suit for some of the midday sessions in the edit.
