Florence + the Machine’s soulful power theatrics will ensure to have spirits lifted to great heights as the sun sets across Watergate Bay. The musical heavywieght oozes credibility with three no.1 albums across the past decade including massive hits ‘You Got The Love’, ‘Dog Days Are Over’ and ‘Hunger’.

Boardmasters has also unveiled 17 more epic acts for 2019. Festivalgoers can expect unforgettable sets from British grime superstars Giggs and Dizzee Rascal this summer. With the 2018 Brits Critics’ Choice award, Mercury Prize nomination and critically-acclaimed debut album ‘Lost and Found’ under her belt, one of the most exciting names to emerge from the UK music scene this year, Jorja Smith joins the Boardmasters line up for 2019, along with prolific indie rock band Franz Ferdinand, having released their first single 15 years ago this year.

Also riding the wave towards Watergate Bay in August are drum and bass duo Wilkinson b2b Sub Focus, garage legend DJ EZ, Bristol punk rockers IDLES, funk and reggae outfit Michael Franti + Spearhead, hip-hop artist Ocean Wisdom and vocal powerhouse Lewis Capaldi.

Crowds can also expect unmissable sets from Australian singer-songwriter Pete Murray and grime royalty Lady Leshurr, hotly-tipped DJ Flava D, London electro DJ and producer Dimension, Rhythm Section’s own Bradley Zero, electronic-pop singer Self Esteem and recent Welsh Music Prize-winning Boy Azooga, who will join Florence + the Machine for five unforgettable days in the most breathtaking festival setting in the UK.

Boardmasters will continue its tremendous work to keep the festival and the Cornish coastline, cleaner than ever before. There will be beach cleans in partnership with Surfers Against Sewage throughout the year as well as during the festival. This year’s successful re-useable cup scheme will continue, along with the litter bond to incentivize campers to pick up their litter and recycle, Cornwall’s ‘Final Straw’ scheme and much more in place to make Boardmasters as clean, environmentally-friendly and enjoyable as possible. This is all part of the mission to have eradicated all non-essential single use plastics from Boardmasters by 2020.

Beyond the music, Boardmasters will return with its epic surf competition, part of the World Surf League Qualifying Series as the biggest names on the international surf scene battle it out on the waves at Fistral Beach. More details to be revealed in 2019. Following huge success this year, Boardmasters is bringing back its Zennor Haven Wellbeing Area at Watergate Bay. The perfect place to unwind and relax, there will be yoga, mental health workshops, healthy food offerings, meditation and much more. The UK’s largest Silent Disco will make a hotly-anticipated return on Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 August as scores of festivalgoers kick start 2019 proceedings at the Watergate Bay main stage.

In 2018, Boardmasters welcomed over 50,000 festival goers to Cornwall. Headliners Catfish and the Bottlemen, The Chemical Brothers and George Ezra entertained festivalgoers against the picture-perfect backdrop of Watergate Bay, while at Fistral Beach, pro surfers battled it out in UK waters over five action-packed days. NME enjoyed “stunning sea views and an eclectic mic of indie, dance, dubstep, rap and soul”, with The Sun describing it as “stellar” and the Daily Star taking in “Instagram-worthy sunsets”. The Cornish Guardian commented, “brilliant Boardmasters returns with a bang” whilst the Newquay Voice summarised it as a “stunning weekend of great music and fun”.

Inspired by the freedom, adventure and creativity of surfing and music, Boardmasters was born in 1981. Expect parties that run late into the night and a beautiful beach to recuperate on during the day. The five-day event is situated across two stunning locations in Cornwall – UK surfing mecca,Fistral Beach, where world class International Surf Competitions take place, and the most stunning location in the country to watch live music,Watergate Bay.

The Wave plan to bring ‘The Cove’ to London

A state of the art project is planned for Edmonton’s Lee Valley Leisure Complex.

Plans announced today by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority (LVRPA) and inland surfing specialists, The Wave show a £40m project in around 100 acres of land in the Lee Valley Regional Park and it could make London the first capital city in the world to offer an inland surfing destination.

LVRPA, as landowner, and The Wave, whose first inland surfing venue will open in Bristol next year, will work together to develop a planning application for a world-class surfing destination called ‘The Wave London’. The sustainable project will be the centrepiece of ‘an exciting reinvigoration of land’ adjacent to the Lee Valley Athletics Centre in Edmonton, North London.

The concept, unveiled today, will allow people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to have a go at surfing, whether it’s a child stepping on a board for the first time, or a pro-surfer training for the Olympics. The Wavegarden Cove technology generates up to 1,000 quality waves per hour, with heights starting at 50cm and peaking at almost 2m. The popularity of surfing is growing, and the sport will feature for the first time at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020.

Engagement with local communities and interested organisations will take place alongside extensive, detailed site analysis – and subject to the results of this, a planning application will be submitted.

If plans are approved by the London Borough of Enfield and the Mayor of London, The Wave London would offer a new purpose-built surfing lake and could feature other elements, such as a high-performance surfing and skateboarding centre, health and rehabilitation, cycle trails, high ropes, and glamping accommodation.

The existing lake in the north of the Lee Valley Leisure Complex will not be affected by The Wave London and the project aims to enhance its biodiversity. Activities at the world-class Lee Valley Athletics Centre would continue as normal.

Shaun Dawson, Chief Executive of Lee Valley Regional Park Authoritysaid: “These proposals have the potential to create a stunning new regional leisure hub bringing health, fitness, sport and outdoor activities to millions of people along with many new jobs.

“This leisure development would complement our existing world class sports venues up and down the 26-mile-long Regional Park, including our three hugely popular London 2012 legacy venues providing the best cycling, white water, hockey and tennis opportunities to be found anywhere.

“Lee Valley Leisure Complex was once a sewage works and rubbish dumps. A generation ago we built what was then Europe’s largest leisure centre. Now we hope to bring inland surfing here to create an outstanding new leisure destination for the capital and the region. This marks another exciting chapter in the history of the Lee Valley.”

Nick Hounsfield, Founder of The Wavesaid: “Surfing is an incredible sport which has proven health benefits – both physically and mentally. The Wave London would give people the chance to try surfing and experience these benefits in an urban environment. Being in the water, catching waves, has the ability to change lives, whilst being so much fun!

“We want to create a space where people can have an amazing time by connecting with nature, each other and themselves. We know we can enhance this space, and encourage more people to get outside in nature and get active.

“We have already started to build The Wave Bristol. From the very beginning we have worked closely with local communities to ensure our project meets their needs and provides world-class surfing facilities for professionals and beginners alike. We look forward to working with local Edmonton residents, organisations and partners in the same way to ensure The Wave London works for both them and visitors to the area.”

About the site

Lee Valley Leisure Complex is home to Lee Valley Athletics Centre, which opened in 2007, the newly refurbished 12 screen Odeon Luxe Lee Valley and a wedding and events venue. Lee Valley Golf Course and Lee Valley Camping and Caravan Park, Edmonton are also on the site and, if the scheme goes ahead, will close. LVRPA is already exploring opportunities with the London Borough of Enfield to provide alternative facilities for golfers. The site is designated as Green Belt and has been used for leisure since the 1970s.

About the technology

The Wave London will use Wavegarden’s Cove technology, which can generate up to 1000 quality waves per hour, with heights starting at 50cm and peaking at almost 2m (6.5ft), allowing people of all ages and abilities to experience the joy of surfing. With the potential to host over 80 users at the same time, the Cove has six different surfing zones that offer waves of different size and power specifically designed to provide ideal conditions for everyone, from professionals to newcomers picking up a surfboard for the very first time.

Pegleg and Hudson peddle from John O’Groats to Lands End for charity

Pegleg Bennet and John Hudson from Perranporth have peddled the length of the country to raise money for two amazing charities The Wave Project and Handstand – the Appeal for Marshall Janson, the little boy from Perranporth who had his limbs amputated due to meningitis.

The pair took six weeks to peddle the 1,000 miles.

Well done lads!

Win a Volcom Tee For You And A Mate

Volcom’s latest collection Noise, Noise, Noise is a collaboration with surf prodigy Noa Deane to tie in with his cinematic surf movie Head Noise.

For Noa the ocean is liberation in life and Head Noise is taking to the ocean to escape the chaos in the streets, beating the noise out of your head by going faster and higher. From Australia to Hawaii to Indonesia, the film follows Noa to his favourite surf spots for some high-action, heavy-charging, avant-garde surfing, captured through the lens of filmmaker Mikey Mallalieu.

To tie in with the film, the Noise Noise Noise collection reflects Noa’s vision to make sense of the noise within his own head and destroy the noise of the stereotype which surrounds him.

“Have you ever been woken up in the middle of the night with loud noises blasting in your head? Sort of like changing the TV to channel zero and the snow sound is blaring! That’s head noise! This collection was built off the idea of shifting your head and making something different.” – Noa Deane

Get a piece of the Noise Noise Noise action: Volcom are giving away 10 t-shirts from the collection – that’s five winners who’ll receive two t-shirts each. To enter, click below and follow the three simple steps on Instagram.
