Shark Island. Is there a better named wave in the world? A fearsome slab off the coastline of Cronulla this wave featured on all the major mag covers in the 80’s and 90’s. A ledging beast of a wave often wider than it is tall and who’s lip has ‘death’ inscribed on its teeth.
These days it’s seems somewhat overlooked, apart from the bodyboarders Shark Island challenge, you don’t see much of the place. Maybe it has been superseded by ‘Ours’ and ‘Shippies’. It still looks pretty sick, as this compilation tape shows..
Chris made land minutes ago in Antigua…It is the first, solo, unsupported Transatlantic SUP crossing.
What an effort!
Chris began the first ever, solo, SUP Trans-Atlantic Crossing on December 6, 2016. It has consisted of paddling a marathon every day for 120 days, over 4500 miles (7500 km).
Beginning in Morocco, the voyage has taken Chris past the Canary Islands, crossing the Atlantic Ocean, then moving towards the Caribbean Leeward Island of Antigua.
If the weather permits, he hopes to end the journey in Florida.
Chris has been paddling a custom-made six meter stand up paddle board/craft, all in support of charities which he hopes will help millions of kids in Africa.
Chris has partnered with an incredible group of corporate sponsors, that have committed a huge amount to this project. These funds will be used in three areas:
Signature of Hope Trust – Build at least five schools in some of the poorest regions of (South) Africa through Signature of Hope.
The Lunchbox Fund – Establish an annuity that will provide a monthly dividend to feed and educate thousands of children in conjunction with The Lunchbox Fund.
Operation Smile – Establish an annuity that will provide a monthly dividend to pay for life-changing cleft lip and palate surgeries for children born with this facial defect through Operation Smile.
Actually he’s not in jail sources say he’s in the airport immigration detention area, after losing his passport and trying to enter the European country without it…
Hopefully some of our connected Portuguese friends will be able to help..
The BBC are reporting that a Wavegarden has been proposed for Edinburgh, Scotland. The wave pool race for space has hit a bit of a plateau with only the Surf Snowdonia Wavegarden really operating commercially. NLand in Texas just opened and then closed due to problems with the lining.
The boffins at Wavegarden HQ have apparently devised a new system that works in a baseball diamond shaped lake without the imposing central pontoon. We’re yet to see a working model but pumping ocean style waves every 8 to 10 seconds is rumoured and near ready to be shown to the world.
Kelly’s pool looks great but as to whether it can be rolled out worldwide and deal with the reset time issue remains to be seen. Also Waveloch’s version, mooted for the long awaited Bristol development, is apparently near ready … but the years are ticking on. Then of course there’s the Webber version lauded as being best ever. But remains unbuilt.
Which is the main issue. These developments cost millions and need to recoup the cost. It’s also baby steps with every new installation providing lessons for next time. Local support seems positive unlike a development planned for Perth, the Australian one, not the Scottish one.
From the BBC story:
Andy Hadden, co-founder of Tartan Leisure Ltd, said: “Wavegarden Scotland is a thrilling new concept in the adventure leisure industry. If approved, it could position Scotland as a leading surfing destination as the country already has some world-class natural breaks. “We’ve received fantastic feedback on our plans to date and we look forward to sharing them with the local community.” William Watson, president of the Scottish Surfing Federation added: “We fully support this fantastic project and will continue to work with Tartan Leisure Ltd to ensure it fits with the best interests of Scottish surfing.” The public consultations will be held between 15:30 and 19:30 on Wednesday at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, and next Monday between 14:30 and 19:30 at Ratho Library.

The Surf Music In Paradise concept kicked off in 2015 with the very first exclusive surf music shows featuring Californian surfer/musician Donavon Frankenreiter. Since then, The Perfect Wave has welcomed a host of other exciting artists including Pete Murray, Tex Perkins (Cruel Sea) & Phil Reynolds (Grinspoon).
Surf Music In Paradise is the combined brainchild of The Perfect Wave’s CEO Jamie Gray and Global Marketing Manager – Ben Horvath. Ben said, “As a fan, attendee and sponsor of some of the early Big Day Out’s, Warped Tours and many other gigs when I was publishing Underground Surf Magazine, I know the super crowded, sweaty, over policed festival gigs these days aren’t really a fun option for over 25s. It’s where the idea of combining a love of music and surfing in a special week in paradise came from.
