One of Europes most iconic shaper/sprayer combos are ‘back’ in business and producing a limited edition run of classic shapes and custom sprays.
Shaper and head honcho at Homeblown Blanks Tris Cokes and Neil Wernham have been back in the factory after Neil returned from NZ for a visit. The pair were part of the legendary Tris team with main man/glassing legend/surfshop pioneer Johnny Manetta. The visit also coincided with Johnny Manettas book “Looking of something to find” (Click here for the full story)
Many of the 70’s and 80’s Tris Surfboards are now sought after collectors pieces with one going for rather large sum recently and Wernhams sprays being particularly in demand.
Carve caught up with Tris to find out what the story was…
How do you feel picking up a planer again?
I didn’t stop, it’s having Neil here in the midst of the retro fad/nostalgia that has reminded folk of TS.
When was the last time you produced boards together?
Now you’re assuming I have a memory…probably mid 70’s!
How many boards are you doing and what designs?
So far mostly in old style single fins. The sprays are from Neil’s head, similar to those he produced in the old days with a nod to Rick Griffin.
Are you doing any customs?
Yes we have done a couple of customs to date, Neil’s off in two weeks so anyone aspiring to a custom one of his sprays better be quick.
Where can people buy them?
Easiest route is Tris Surf Shop website www.trissurfshop.com/#!contact

For the first time since 1892, a hurricane is smashing Cape Verde islands in the Atlantic. Hurricane Fred is tracking through the islands at 12 mph through the islands in the far eastern North Atlantic. The center of Fred is expected to pass over or very close to the northwestern Cape Verde islands of Sao Nicolou, Santa Luzuia, Sao Vicente, and Sao Antao by Monday night.
When Fred became a hurricane at 2 am EDT Monday it was the easternmost ‘ ormation’ location for any hurricane in the historical record; the previous record was held by Hurricane Three of 1900, which became a hurricane at 23°W, south of the Cape Verde islands. The easternmost hurricane ever observed was Hurricane Faith of 1966, which maintained hurricane status to a position north of the British Isles.

Yes it seems David Cameron and his wife Samantha have had a taste of what it really means to be a surfer; a mouth full of South West Waters insidious shit.
South West Water confirmed to the Times that sewage was released into the sea through CSO’s on Sunday and Wednesday off Polzeath, where the British PM and his wife were bodyboarding on Monday and Tuesday. Given the World Health Organisations recommended 24-48 hour window after a spill in which water can still be contaminated and a danger to health it seem highly probable he got lot closer to the electorate than he ever envisaged!
David Smith, of SAS, told Times reporter Simon de Bruxelles: “If the Camerons were swimming within the time frames of a spillage they might well be at risk. There could be anything from a small health risk such as skin, eye, ear, or throat infections to much more serious conditions such as E.coli or hepatitis, which can be present within raw sewage.”
The average surfer ingests 200ml of seawater for every surf, even if they mean to avoid it. “If surfers are using polluted waters the chance of them becoming ill raises significantly,” he said.
You can’t make it up can you?
The best video you will watch all weekend. Seal wants a tummy tickle. Videographer Gary Grayson get an unbelievable encounter with an Atlantic Grey Seal whilst Scuba Diving in the Isles of Scilly off the coast of Cornwall.
As Atlantic surfers we are lucky to share the ocean with these guys. The wild ones are usually inquisitive but keep their distance, the rescued and rehabbed seals are more playful with plenty of leash pulling and close encounters recorded. As with all wildlife don’t approach or scare but if they come to you like this there’s not a lot you can do but play.
